How To Apply for HELB Loan and Higher Education Financing (HEF)

HELB LOAN AND HIGHER EDUCATION FINANCING 

HEF and HELB Loan is available to students who attain minimum grade for joining TVET, College & University. Those who sponsor themselves to any of the institutions do not qualify for HEF. They can however apply for HELB Loan as the other HEF beneficiaries.

The following are what you will require for a successful application;

  1. Applicant’s valid email address and a valid telephone number registered with their National ID.
  2. Applicant’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) index numbers and years of sitting for the examination
  3. Applicant’s Passport size photo (300 px by 250 px in jpeg / jpg / png format)
  4. Applicant’s copy of the National ID/Maisha Card (both sides should be scanned and be in PDF format) or Birth Certificate if a minor (alternatively uses KCSE details)
  5. Applicant’s valid bank account details or valid Mobile Money Number i.e. MPESA, Airtel Money or Telkom Cash are accepted (registered under the applicant’s name and ID No)
  6. Parent(s)’ National ID and registered telephone numbers (registered with their ID for it to verify) or death certificate if deceased (in PDF)
  7. Two guarantors’ ID numbers and registered telephone numbers (can be parents, and again the telephone numbers need to be registered with their IDs)
  8. Copy of the sponsorship letter (in PDF) if sponsored in Secondary School and or Primary School.

The procedure to follow is;

1.  Account Creation

Visit HEF Portal and click on Students Portal. Confirm if you have an National ID by choosing YES or if you don’t by choosing NO from the drop down. Enter ID details as required or alternatively KCSE details for those without ID then Validate. (Lack of national ID can be due to instance of being under 18 years of age or having attained the age but have not applied for the ID or having done the application but ID is still under processing)

2.  Email Activation

Check your email Inbox or Spam/Junk for an account activation link, click on it and your account will now be active. This is a very sensitive stage since the activation email is only sent once and you can not create another account with similar details even if you change email address. Therefore ensure you enter email address correctly; and do not delete emails anyhow before completing the registration lest you delete the one with activation link.

3.  Login

Access your account by entering the email address and password entered during account creation step. Enter an operational telephone number for receiving verification code/OTP which is the One Time Password.

4.  Profile Update

Fill profile details, update bio-data and give consent for collection of personal data by checking in on the relevant box.

Fill in your residential details; previous academic details i.e. secondary & primary school; add your college/university details for the institution you are joining; fill in parent details and verify their telephone numbers.

5. Submitting Scholarship Request

You have now completed the online form. Click on the Submit button to send your HEF Scholarship application for review and approval.
