ToggleA Guide to Ordinary & Diplomatic Passport Application in Kenya
Introduction
A passport is an identification document that allow citizens of a particular country to travel beyond the national borders (where it is needed). In Kenya it is issued by Directorate of Immigration Services (DIS) through the government e-Services platforms famously e-Citizen Portal. The Kenyan passport has a validity period of 10 years after which you have to renew it.
Requirements
There are several instances when one applies for a passport:
New/First Time Application
- Passport Size Photos
- Signature of Applicant
- Original Birth Certificate and a copy for citizens of Kenya by birth
- Certificate of Registration for citizens of Kenya by registration
- Original applicant’s national identity card and a copy for adults
- Copy of the recommenders national identity card
- Copies of parents’ national identity cards/ Death certificates where applicable
- Duly filled Consent Form for minors
- A duly filled application Form 19 and 2 payment invoices (Printable after successfully completing application process online)
- Payment of the prescribed fees
Other Documents that might be necessary:
Copies of IDs for next of kin, Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificates for children
Renewal & Replacement
Renewal is for expired passport after 10 years while replacement is for those changing to new version (EAC) passport from the older version.
- Passport Size Photos
- Signature of Applicant
- Original applicant’s national identity card and a copy for adults
- The previous passport which you will need to make a copies for some pages
- Duly filled Consent Form for minors
- A duly filled application Form 19 and 2 payment invoices
- Payment of the prescribed fees
Other Documents that might be necessary:
Copies of IDs for next of kin, Marriage Certificate, Birth Certificates for children
Lost Passport
- Passport Size Photos
- Signature of Applicant
- Original applicant’s national identity card and a copy for adults
- Personal Statement explaining circumstances for the loss
- Sworn Affidavit to support the above
- Police Abstract for loss of passport
- Copy of the lost passport bio data page if available
- Duly filled Consent Form for minors
- A duly filled application Form 19 and 2 payment invoices
- Payment of the prescribed fees
Mutilated Passport
- Passport Size Photos
- Signature of Applicant
- Original applicant’s national identity card and a copy for adults
- Personal Statement explaining circumstances for the loss
- Sworn Affidavit to support the above
- The mutilated passport which you will make copies for several pages
- Duly filled Consent Form for minors
- A duly filled application Form 19 and 2 payment invoices
- Payment of the prescribed fees
Change of Names
During application process, applicant can make errors in keying names or it can occur during printing stage. The passport owner might also want to change for whichever reasons. To do that, you will need;
- Passport Size Photos
- Signature of Applicant
- Original applicant’s national identity card and a copy for adults
- The current passport which you will make copies for several pages
- Present written explanation for change of names addressed to the Passport Control Officer.
- Attach Supportive documents i.e. deed poll plus the Kenya gazette notice, marriage certificate etc.
- Duly filled Consent Form for minors
- A duly filled application Form 19 and 2 payment invoices
- Payment of the prescribed fees
Temporary Permit
This is a travel document valid for one (1) year and issued to Kenyans to enable them travel within the East Africa Community (EAC) region.

- Destination Country
- Original ID and a copy for Adults or Original Passport and copy for adults
- Original Birth Certificate and a copy for minors
- Dully filled online form and invoices (To be printed at the end of successful application) and present at border control point

How To
- Login/Register an e-Citizen account
- Fill online application form
- Scan and upload required documents
- Pay prescribed fee
- Book appointment
- Print the duly completed application form and two invoices
- Attached copies of required documents
- Submission and bio-metrics at any of the Processing Stations at Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu Embu, Nakuru, Kisii and Eldoret and in Foreign Missions in London, Washington DC, Berlin, Pretoria, Dubai and Paris.
Wait Period & What Follows
Processing period ranges from time to time but in ideal case should be complete in 2 -3 weeks.
Once your passport is ready, you need to have other itineraries for smooth travel. These include; Destination/Travel Plan, Visa, Tickets.
